Supporting WordPress

WordPress and Matt Mullenweg have been in the news recently due to their legal battle with WP Engine.

While I believe Matt and WordPress have a strong case, listening to Matt’s interviews reminded me of the costs WordPress.org incurs just to keep the WordPress ecosystem running.

Maintaining WordPress is expensive. Millions of site owners, including myself, benefit greatly from WordPress.org and its ecosystem.

Although I pay for hosting every month, I don’t have to pay WordPress for access to their servers or the regular updates to WordPress and the plugins I use on my site.

Notice I said I don’t have to pay. I’m not legally obligated to give anything to WordPress.org. There’s no contract. But because of the immense value I get from WordPress.org, I’ve decided to commit to donating at least $10 a year as long as I run a single instance of WordPress.

$10 isn’t a lot, but it’s something. If every site running an instance of WordPress donated just $10 a year, that would amount to roughly $5 billion in funding. That would go a long way toward ensuring WordPress.org remains available, keeping our sites running and supporting community development.

If you use WordPress, I encourage you to consider supporting it financially. I’d love to see it continue for decades, and I’m sure you would too.
